In this work, polyvinyl alcohol/graphene oxide composite films were prepared by layer-by-layer spin coating using polyvinyl alcohol and graphene oxide solution. The composite films have excellent toughness and rigidity benefit from adding of graphene oxide and the use of the novel method. The stress at break and nominal strain at break of pure polyvinyl alcohol film are 55.7 MPa and 75.8%. When the content of graphene oxide was 0.2 wt% in the composite films, the stress at break reached to 91.0 MPa and the nominal strain at break reached to 198.4%. The elastic modulus of pure polyvinyl alcohol film is 2.2 GPa, when the graphene oxide content in the composite film increases to 0.2 wt%, the value increases to 3.7 GPa. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the composite films microstructure. It was shown that the composite films have sandwich-like layered structure. The infrared spectroscopy results showed that the hydrogen bonds between graphene oxide slices and polyvinyl alcohol chains, which were helpful to improve the mechanical properties of the composite film.
