Temperature dependence of chemisorbed atomic carbon critical cover, O-cr = f(T) has been measured for a metal able to dissolve carbon in the bulk, Rh(111); this is the cover when graphene islands start to form on the surface. It has been shown that value of O-cr varies from 0.11 at 1000 K to 0.22 at 1800 K, where O-cr =1 corresponds to the carbon surface concentration N-Cm = 3.86.10(15) cm(-2). Relationship and differences between surface phase transition parameters and bulk solubility limit has been discussed. The activation energy E-att = 2.6 eV has been determined for atomic carbon attachment to the graphene island from the chemisorbed phase.
