Graphene was prepared via microwave assisted intercalation-exfoliation of graphite by using ammonia as intercalation agent. The effects of ammonia on graphene preparation and its intercalation mechanism were investigated. It was found that ammonia can greatly improve the exfoliation effect of graphene in the way of entering into the interlayer between graphite and forming C=N bond. The quality of graphene depends greatly on the quantity of ammonia. The optimized ammonia quantity (molar ratio to graphite) is 4:1. The obtained graphene has a thin thickness of 2.3 nm and a big specific surface area of 379.2 m(2)/g. This work proposed the "wedge" model of intercalation agent for graphite intercalation exfoliation.
