We present the symmetry representations of the Raman-active modes in graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with pure armchair (AGNR) or zigzag edges (ZGNR) and explain the representations in terms of fundamental modes and overtones in the Gamma-point phonon spectrum of GNRs. This provides possible means to assign Raman peaks in measured polarization-dependent spectra. We show simulated Raman spectra in zz-polarization for a 7-AGNR and a 4-ZGNR.
