In this study, a novel laminated heterogeneous structural titanium matrix composites (TMCs) were fabricated by the incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) via the flake powder metallurgy route. The heterogeneous deformation between soft and hard regions produced significant back stress hardening. Results showed that dramatically higher ultimate tensile strength of 858 MPa could be achieved in 0.1wt% GNPs/Ti(R1) composite, which exhibited the enhanced strength (+166 MPa compared with that of pure Ti(R1)) while maintained a good ductility of 18%.
