In this study, a series of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) modified with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) was prepared to improve adhesion forces and magneto-sensitive adhesion properties. A laboratory-made test bench was designed and constructed, and the adhesion forces of the prepared MREs were measured under the same experimental conditions. Experimental results showed that the adhesion force of the modified MREs increased by 359.4% as the mass fraction of GNPs was increased from 0 to 1.5%. The adhesion force of the modified MREs also increased as the applied magnetic field was increased, and the adhesive force of the sample contained 15 vol % ferromagnetic particles increased by 65.6% as the magnetic field increased from 0 to 300 mT. Moreover, the possible mechanism for the improved magneto-sensitive adhesion property of the modified MREs was proposed. The tunable adhesion property of the modified MREs provides a new approach for controlling adhesion and desorption.
