Synthesis of nanomaterials under high temperature is always a challenge. Here, we provide a new approach to prepare a nanostructured phosphor at high temperature with the aid of the arc-discharge method. Eu3+-doped La2O3/La2O2CO3 nanoparticles were obtained from annealing the La2O3:Eu/graphene composite at 600-750 degrees C in air. Innovatively, the La2O3:Eu/graphene composite was first produced by the arc-discharge method. The graphene sheets in the composite separate the oxide nanoparticles to avoid nanoparticle agglomeration and grain growth during the high-temperature annealing. This nanostructured Eu3+-doped La2O3/La2O2CO3 was observed to have an intense photoluminescence intensity, comparable to the sample from conventional solid state reaction. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.
