In the last decades, it has been seen that the evolution of nanomaterials have played important role in tuning the structure and shape of the materials to develop the desired applications. The MoS2 is a multifunctional material and possess excellent properties in different forms such as bulk, quantum dots, nanoscale and so on. The single layered MoS2 has indirect band gap of similar to 1.9 eV which make it suitable material for post-silicon electronics. The MoS2 possesses hexagonal arrangement with covalently bonded of S-Mo-S atomic layers, and adjacent layers of the MoS2 lies with van der Waals interaction. The MoS2 also exists with different poly-types. The promising and excellent properties of layered MoS2 make it a suitable candidate for various optoelectronic applications. On the other side, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) which is outstanding two dimensional (2D) material has received enormous attention for various applications due to its excellent properties. rGO is a widely explored 2D material for the synthesis of hybrid composites for various applications. In last few years, hybrid structures of MoS2 and rGO (MoS2/rGO) have been explored in electrochemical sensing, energy storage, energy conversion and photocatalysis applications. In this review work, we have attempted to encapsulate and compile the aspects related to the synthesis of MoS2 and MoS2/rGO hybrids with brief description of synthesis, and applications in electrochemical sensing and dye sensitized solar cells.
