We use the tight-binding method to study spin-dependent exciton effects in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). Our results show the three spin-triplet excitons are not degenerate in energy due to different charge distributions: Electrons and holes are distributed on the opposite edges of ZGNRs for the triplets with spin projection s(z) = 0, while they are on the same edges with s(z) = 1 or -1. We also show that spin-orbit coupling can activate optical absorptions of these spin triplets. These results reveal interesting features of excitons in materials with spin-related electronic structures.
