Carbon atoms can form many allotropes, which makes it as one of the most noticeable elements in the Periodic Table. Here, we report that single-to few-layered graphene, single-to multi-wall nanotubes and nested closed fullerenes may be fabricated on ionic liquid surfaces by a modified LP-CVD method without the assistance of metallic catalysts and near room temperature. The average size of the graphene platelets is about 300-500 nm, and the outer diameter of the single-wall carbon nanotube is 1.39 nm. The multi-wall nanotubes with semi-circular closed end and fullerenes were fabricated for the first time on the ionic liquid surfaces, and the inner diameters of both the nanotubes and fullerenes are on the order of several nanometers. Based on the experi-mental results, the growth mechanism of the allotropes of carbon is presented uniformly.
