NOVELTY - Modified static dissipative material comprises: (a) a static dissipative material having a sheet resistance of less than or equal to 1012 Ohm/sq as measured by the Van der Pauw method when applied to a substrate, and (b) many inorganic or organic moieties having at least two reactive functional groups, where each reactive functional group comprises a silyl group, a phosphonyl group, a biphosphonyl group, thiol, a carboxy group, and an epoxy group, the inorganic or organic moieties are chemically bonded to the static dissipative material, and the modified static dissipative material has a static contact angle of water at 50-130 degrees as measured by the Laplace-Young fitting method when applied to a substrate. USE - The material is useful in a coating composition for coating a substrate and for manufacturing an article (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The material: exhibits improved mechanical properties, improved abrasion resistance; and is economical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) a coating composition comprising the modified static dissipative material and at least one carriers or additives; (2) preparing (m1) the modified static dissipative material comprising providing a dispersion of the unmodified static dissipative material in a solvent, and adding an inorganic or organic compound having a least two reactive functional groups, where the reactive functional group comprises a silyl group, a phosphonyl group, a biphosphonyl group, thiol, a carboxy group, and an epoxy group to form a chemical bond between the static dissipative material and the inorganic or organic compound; (3) coating (m2) a substrate comprising applying a coating composition to at least part of the surface of a substrate; and (4) an article of manufacture coated with the coating composition.
