NOVELTY - An alkali metal battery comprises an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte in ionic contact with the anode and the cathode, and an optional porous separator electronically separating anode and cathode. The anode comprises a graphene-metal hybrid foam composed of multiple pores, pore walls, and a lithium-attracting metal or sodium-attracting metal residing in the pores or deposited on the pore walls. The lithium-attracting metal content of 0.1-90% is selected from gold, silver, magnesium, zinc, titanium, sodium, potassium, aluminum, iron, vanadium, and their alloy for a lithium metal battery. USE - Alkali metal battery. Uses include but are not limited to electric vehicle, hybrid electric vehicle, lap-top computers and mobile phones. ADVANTAGE - The alkali metal battery exhibits long and stable charge-discharge cycle life without exhibiting lithium or sodium dendrite problems. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An alkali metal battery comprises an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte in ionic contact with the anode and the cathode, and an optional porous separator electronically separating anode and cathode. The anode comprises a graphene-metal hybrid foam composed of multiple pores, pore walls, and a lithium-attracting metal or sodium-attracting metal residing in the pores or deposited on the pore walls. The lithium-attracting metal content of 0.1-90% is selected from gold, silver, magnesium, zinc, titanium, sodium, potassium, aluminum, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, tin, vanadium, chromium, and their alloy for a lithium metal battery, or sodium-attracting metal content of 0.1-90% is selected from gold, silver, magnesium, zinc, titanium, sodium, potassium, aluminum, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, tin, vanadium, chromium, and their alloy for a sodium metal battery, based on the total hybrid foam weight. The pore walls contain single-layer or few-layer graphene sheets having 2-10 layers of stacked graphene planes having an inter-plane spacing d002 of 0.3354-0.40 nm as measured by X-ray diffraction and the single-layer or few-layer graphene sheets contain a pristine graphene material having essentially zero % of non-carbon elements, or a non-pristine graphene material having 0.001-25 wt.% non-carbon elements. The non-pristine graphene is selected from graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, graphene fluoride, graphene chloride, graphene bromide, graphene iodide, hydrogenated graphene, nitrogenated graphene, doped graphene, and/or chemically functionalized graphene. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for alkali metal battery electrode.
