NOVELTY - Sorbent composition comprises a nitrogen and oxygen-functionalized graphene prepared by a method involves reacting graphene oxide with an amine of the formula NHR2 where each R is independently selected from hydrogen, 1-5C alkyl, and 1-5C aminoalkyl, the reacting occurring in the absence of a carbon nanotube and occurring under process conditions sufficient to prepare the nitrogen and oxygen-functionalized graphene, where oxygen is present in the graphene oxide in a concentration greater than 5 percent and less than 40 percent by weight of which carboxyl functionality represents from 30-100 percent by weight of the total oxygen. USE - The sorbent composition is used in a process of removing one or more volatile organic compounds from a gaseous environment, such as air or industrial waste gas streams also used in stand-alone air purification system, Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system and industrial sorbent bed. ADVANTAGE - The sorbent composition provide utility in cleaning air and waste gas streams of unpleasant as well as harmful volatile compunds (VOC's), exhibits an excellent degree of regenerability after the sorbent is saturated or partially saturated with VOC sorbate.
