NOVELTY - Preparing a crosslinked hydraulic fracturing fluid comprises: combining a hydraulic fracturing fluid comprising a polyacrylamide polymer, guar gum, and/or hydroxypropyl guar gum with coated proppants, where the coated proppants comprise a proppant particle and a resin proppant coating on the proppant particle, the resin proppant coating comprises resin and a zirconium oxide crosslinker, and the resin comprises at least one of phenol, furan, epoxy, urethane, phenol-formaldehyde, polyester, vinyl ester, and urea aldehyde; and allowing the zirconium oxide crosslinker within the resin proppant coating to crosslink the polyacrylamide polymer within the hydraulic fracturing fluid at a pH of at least 9, thus forming the crosslinked hydraulic fracturing fluid. USE - The method is useful for preparing crosslinked hydraulic fracturing fluid. ADVANTAGE - The method: utilizes proppant coatings to protect proppant particle from degradation by presence of aqueous fluids at down hole temperatures, increases surface area of particle, results the crush stress is distributed over a larger area of the coated proppant particle, also adheres to proppant and prevents proppants that are crushed upon application of formation stress from releasing proppant fines and have greater density than conventional uncoated proppants; increases rate of hydrocarbon production from subsurface formation; utilizes polyacrylamide polymer that increases viscosity of crosslinked hydraulic fracturing fluid as compared to the hydraulic fracturing fluid; and makes fracturing fluids that have increased viscosity without additional additives.
