NOVELTY - A sintered compact comprises a mixture containing a nitrogen-containing compound component and a conductive carbon material. USE - Sintered compact used in composition for electrolyte of catalyst layer, catalyst carrier and solid electrolyte membrane of membrane electrode assembly for polymer electrolyte fuel cell (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The sintered compact is obtained in stable when carbon material used as raw material, and has excellent stability, conductivity, coating property, power generation characteristics, water transport and gas permeability, and suppressed generation of solids. The fuel cell has high durability. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: composition, which comprises the sintered compact and metal catalyst; and membrane electrode assembly, which comprises a solid electrolyte membrane (107), a gas diffusion layer (101), and polymer electrolyte fuel cell catalyst layer.
