NOVELTY - A flexible metamaterial structure comprises: flexible substrate (12); and two-dimensional graphene blocks (10) disposed in an array on/in the flexible substrate, where each graphene block contains graphene sheets, where minimum lateral dimension of the face of the graphene block is dependent on the temperature of operation of the flexible metamaterial structure. The structure is two-dimensional structure having two sides. USE - As a flexible metamaterial structure (claimed), used in devices selected from flexible structures, magnetic cloaking devices, micro-electrical mechanical (MEMS) structures, interconnects, and sensors; and for magnetic shielding. ADVANTAGE - The metamaterial structure exhibits magnetic shielding effect of a component of a magnetic field that is applied to the first side of the flexible metamaterial structure, where the magnetic shielding effect reduces the magnitude, on the second side of the flexible metamaterial structure, of the component of the magnetic field that is directed perpendicular to the first side of the flexible metamaterial structure. The metamaterial structures operates at higher temperatures than a metamaterial based on a superconductor; and operates above liquid helium temperature (i.e. 4.2K), above liquid nitrogen temperature (i.e. 77K), or temperature up through room temperature. The structure enables strong anisotropic magnetic response of graphene and graphite. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A flexible metamaterial structure comprises: flexible substrate (12); and two-dimensional graphene blocks (10) disposed in an array on/in the flexible substrate, where each graphene block contains graphene sheets, where minimum lateral dimension of the face of the graphene block is dependent on the temperature of operation of the flexible metamaterial structure. The flexible metamaterial structure is a two-dimensional structure having first side and second side opposite to the first side. The graphene blocks are highly oriented pyrolyzed graphite (HOPG). The flexible substrate comprises silicon; polymer such as polyethylene terephthalate; and silicon carbide. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a three-dimensional flexible metamaterial structure comprising at least two sheets of the flexible metamaterial structure.
