NOVELTY - Preparing graphenic material from asphalt, comprises: treating asphalt with an organic solvent to obtain a first mixture; treating the obtained mixture with sand particles to obtain a second mixture; and subjecting the mixture to appropriate conditions to form graphene sand composite. USE - The process is useful for preparing graphenic material, which is GSC, which is useful: in water purification for removal of dye e.g. rhodamine-6G and pesticide e.g. chlorpyrifos (all claimed), which are two organic pollutants; and as water purifying medium. ADVANTAGE - The process: utilizes cheap carbon precursor comprising asphalt; provides GSC with sufficient absorption properties (all claimed); can be carried out at lower temperatures to form a graphenic material; utilizes a single step strategy to immobilize the graphenic material on sand surface; is simple and cost effective and facilitates the preparation of large scale graphenic material and immobilization of the graphenic material on sand surface without any external chemical agents in a single step; and provides the solution based processibility of the composite.
