NOVELTY - Battery cooling and fire protection system, comprises many battery cells, and a case which holds the battery cells and a cooling liquid comprising a fire protection or fire suppression substance, where one of the battery cells comprises an anode, a cathode (20), an electrolyte disposed between anode and the cathode, a protective housing (12) that partially encloses the anode (36), cathode and electrolyte, and a heat spreader element disposed partially inside the protective housing, and the battery cells are partially submerged in the cooling liquid which is in thermal communication with the heat spreader element and transports heat away from the battery cells through the heat spreader element to the cooling liquid. ADVANTAGE - The battery cooling and fire protection system has ability to suppress fire immediately upon initiation, and enables battery module/pack to operate in a safe mode with reduced or eliminated chance of overheating and without significantly increasing cooling system weight, volume, and complexity.
