NOVELTY - A photodynamic composite comprises porphyrin having four quaternized nitrogen atoms and covalently bonded to a polymer containing reactive amines covalently bonded to a solid-state support. USE - Photodynamic composite for sanitizing contaminated water containing pathogen including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungi and parasites (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The composite efficiently contributes to sanitization of contaminated water. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for method for sanitizing contaminated water, which involves exposing the contaminated water to a photosensitizer comprising porphyrin having four quaternized nitrogens in the presence of light and oxygen. Sufficient quantity of singlet oxygen and super oxide anions are provided by the chemical reaction of the light and the photosensitizer to destroy the pollutants or pathogens present in the contaminated water and to oxidize organic contaminants into carbon dioxide and water, and to produce the water potable.
