NOVELTY - A negative electrode active material comprises a core containing silicon-containing particles having surface entirely or partially coated with lithium-containing oxide particles and a shell surrounding the core. USE - Negative electrode active material used for forming negative electrode for lithium secondary battery (all claimed) used for electronic devices. ADVANTAGE - The active material is economical, efficient and provides battery having excellent output characteristics, charging/discharging characteristics, high current density and capacity. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A negative electrode active material comprises a core containing silicon-containing particles having surface entirely or partially coated with lithium-containing oxide particles and a shell surrounding the core. The lithium-containing oxide is of formula: LixMyOz, where M is element at least one selected from silicon, aluminum, titanium, manganese, nickel, copper, vanadium, zirconium, manganese, cobalt, iron and niobium, x and y is more than 0, z is 0-(x+m.y)/2, and m is oxidation number of element (M). INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: manufacture of negative electrode active material, which involves mixing and complexing silicon-containing particles, lithium precursor, a metal precursor, amorphous carbon and crystalline carbon and heating; electrode, which comprises the negative electrode active material; and lithium secondary battery, which comprises the electrode, electrolyte and anode positioned opposite to the cathode, in order.
