NOVELTY - Manufacture of graphene oxide (GO) involves placing purified coal powder in mild oxidation atmosphere at elevated temperature with respect to room temperature for specific period of time to produce mixture comprising graphene oxide. USE - Manufacture of graphene oxide (claimed). Uses include but are not limited to thermal interface materials, lightweight and impact-resistant composites, corrosion-resistant coatings, filters for water purification, efficient electrodes for energy storage or conversion, etc. ADVANTAGE - The method is simple one-pot synthesis, cost-effective and produces graphene oxide having uniform and thin sheet-like morophologies. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for reduced graphene oxide, which is obtained by heating the graphene oxide to an elevated temperature in inert atmosphere.
