NOVELTY - A carbon catalyst (5) is prepared by dry-mixing graphene nanoplatelets and metal phthalocyanine, heat-processing obtained mixture in an inert gas atmosphere, and carbonizing. The carbon catalyst has surface terminal nitrogen amount of 1-13, which is calculated using a specific relation. USE - Carbon catalyst is used in catalyst ink, and for cathode of fuel cell (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The carbon catalyst has high BET specific surface area and high electroconductivity, and can be prepared by simple process. The electrode containing the carbon catalyst provides fuel cell having high oxygen reduction ability and high electroconductivity. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A carbon catalyst is prepared by dry-mixing graphene nanoplatelets and metal phthalocyanine, heat-processing obtained mixture in an inert gas atmosphere, and carbonizing. The carbon catalyst has surface terminal nitrogen amount of 1-13, which is calculated using a relation: (N'x (N1+N2)), where N' is molar ratio of nitrogen atom with respect to all the elements of material surface measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and (N1+N2) is sum of amount of N1-type nitrogen atoms and N2-type nitrogen atoms calculated by peak resolution of N1 spectrum to the amount of total nitrogen of material surface. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) manufacture of carbon catalyst; (2) catalyst ink, which contains the carbon catalyst, a binder, and a solvent; and (3) fuel cell, which has an electrode containing carbon catalyst, provided on surface(s) of solid polymer electrolyte membrane. DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING(S) - The drawing shows a structure of the fuel cell.
