NOVELTY - An anode active material comprises a phosphorus-antimony-metal carbon composite (I). USE - Active material used for forming anode for electrochemical device e.g. lithium-ion battery, sodium-ion battery, potassium-ion battery, magnesium-ion battery, aluminum-ion battery, lithium-ion capacitor, sodium-ion capacitor, potassium-ion capacitor, magnesium-ion capacitor and aluminum-ion capacitor (all claimed) for portable electronics and automobile applications. ADVANTAGE - The active material exhibits superior cycle stability, less volume expansion and high specific capacity, and improves cycle life and coulombic efficiency of the batteries. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An anode active material comprises a phosphorus-antimony-metal carbon composite of formula: (PxSbyMz)p/(carbon)q (I). x,y = more than 0;z = 0 or more;M = electroconductive metal;p,q (wt.% values of composite) = 0-100%;andx:y,x:z = more than 10:1. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) Electrochemical device, which comprises a cathode comprising a cathode active material and an anode comprising the anode active material, and (2) Preparation of composite (I), which involves (i) ball milling a mixture of phosphorus, antimony, metal (M) and a conductive carbon to form antimony-metal carbon composite of formula: (PxSbyMz)p/(carbon)q (I), and recovering the composite. p+q = 100 wt.%;p = more than 0;andq = 0-100 (excluding 100).
