NOVELTY - The structure (10) has a stack of layered, graphene oxide flakes. Holes (26) having a diameter of ≤ 10 nanaometer (nm). The holes are permeable for charged ions (24). The charged ions are arranged between the layers of the graphene oxide flakes and on the outer surfaces of the stack. The distance between two consecutive layers is 0.2-0.7 nm. The structure is obtainable by hydrothermal reduction and electrochemically activation in an electrolyte system. The thickness of the structure is between 20 nm to 5 micrometer. The structure contains a high degree of defects and is electrically insulating. Cyclic voltammetry technique is performed to obtain charge storage capacitance of the system. A conductive layer is formed on a sacrificial substrate. USE - Reduced electrochemically activated graphene oxide (GO) structure for stimulation and/or recording of a central and peripheral nervous system for diagnosis and therapy of neurodegenerative diseases e.g. inter alia parkinson's disease, epilepsy and chronic pain, for patient in an aqueous environment for neural interfacing applications. ADVANTAGE - The structure has high chemical and mechanical stabilities, and provides electrode device with improved interface precision and device durability so as to increase the acceptance of the technology, improve therapeutic application, and reduce post-operatory complications. The electrode device has high capacitances so as to achieve effective and safe interfacing with the neural tissue, and high levels of charge injection and low impedances when recording and stimulating the neural activity of the nervous system. The interface precision can be improved by reducing electrodes sizes and increasing the resolution of electrode arrays. The structure improves the impedance and charge injection limit (CIL) of metals, together with flexibility, and achieves higher performance in the recording and stimulation of neural tissue, thus compromising the long-term stability. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: a method for preparing an electrochemically activated and reduced graphene oxide structure; and an electrode device for stimulation and/or recording of the central and/or peripheral nervous system.
