NOVELTY - A baffle (100) comprises a proximal end (102) and a distal end (106). The baffle is operable to extend along at least a portion of the membrane so that the proximal end is toward the feed flow inlet of the membrane device and the distal end is toward the feed outlet of the membrane device. The baffle comprises a geometry portion (p1) and a geometry portion (g2). The geometry portion (p1) comprises a higher aspect ratio than the geometry portion (g2) and the geometry portion (p1) is arranged closer to the proximal end of the baffle than the geometry portion (g2). The baffle is provided for a membrane device comprising a membrane, a feed flow inlet, and a feed flow outlet, such as for water filtration. USE - Baffle used for membrane device for water treatment module for water treatment device for separating component from feed flow composition, for concentrating algae, concentrating high solid contents juices, separating proteins from milk, clarifying produced/waste water, concentrating enzymes, sugar refining, such as separating calcium carbonate from sugar feed, and critical metal extraction such as lithium, tungsten, gold and/or silver (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The baffle has smaller pressure drop across the membrane compared to baffle with uniform design parameters through the length of the membrane for the same amount of flux and feed flow rate and requires lower energy per unit volume of the permeate produced, such as as specific energy consumption, compared to that required with baffle with uniform aspect ratio through the length of the membrane. Since the baffle reduces the aspect ratio which increases the degree of enhancement in the crossflow velocities, the resulting improved shear at the surface of the membrane can hydrodynamically reduce the concentration of the accumulated particles near the membrane surface to reduce the severity of concentration polarization and fouling, and thus improving flux. The baffle can operable for use in tubular membrane in applications where suspended solid particulates are effectively required to be removed from the feed solution in an energy efficient method. The baffle is operable to extend along at least a portion of the membrane so that the proximal end is towards the feed flow inlet and the distal end is toward the feed outlet.
