NOVELTY - A composite film or layer comprises ceramic matrix, graphene oxide sheets and/or electrically conductive graphene sheets dispersed in the matrix. USE - A composite film or layer. ADVANTAGE - The film can be electrically conductive depending upon the amount of graphene sheets present in the composite; is substantially transparent, chemically inert and compatible with both glass and hydrophilic silicon oxide (SiOx) substrates; uses simple sol-gel route with excellent potential as an electrically conducting and transparent material; and has an improved performance with higher loading of graphene-based sheets or with chemical modifications of graphene oxide filler sheets. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a method of making composite film or layer by making suspension comprising graphene oxide sheets; introducing ceramic-precursor or ceramic to the suspension to form sol comprising graphene oxide sheets and ceramic particles; depositing sol on substrate as thin film or layer; at least partially reducing graphene oxide sheets to electrically conductive graphene sheets; and thermally consolidating thin film or layer to form a matrix in which graphene oxide sheets and/or graphene sheets are dispersed.
