NOVELTY - Preparation of graphene-reinforced polyethylene terephthalate involves compounding polyethylene terephthalate with dispersed graphene nanoplatelets to obtain masterbatch pellets, and forming polyethylene terephthalate-graphene nanoplatelet nanocomposites. The polyethylene terephthalate-graphene nanoplatelet nanocomposites are present in an amount of 0.5-15 wt.%. USE - Preparation of graphene-reinforced polyethylene terephthalate used in e.g. packaging, protective apparel, automotive, filtration, thermoforming and aerospace applications. ADVANTAGE - The graphene-reinforced polyethylene terephthalate prepared using the method has excellent mechanical strength, thermal resistance, electrical resistance, flame retardation, optical properties, and surface properties. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for an injection molded composition, which comprises polyethylene terephthalate-graphene nanoplatelet nanocomposites that are formed using masterbatch pellets which are melt-compounded using a combination of twin-screw and ultrasound-assisted compounding techniques. DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING(S) - The drawing shows a schematic view of an ultrasound assisted twin-screw extrusion system.
