NOVELTY - Synthesizing a metal catalyst (2), comprises: providing at least one metal complex (10) comprising a metal ion and a non-chelating complexing agent comprising carbon, where the complex has a decomposition temperature; and pyrolyzing the complex at a temperature greater than or equal to the decomposition temperature of the complex, where inducing a formation of nanoparticles (20) surrounded by a carbon matrix (21) to form the catalyst. USE - The method is useful for synthesizing a metal catalyst (claimed), which is used in catalysis of redox reactions, e.g. hydrogen evolution reaction, hydrogen oxidation reaction, complex fuel oxidation, and alcohol oxidation or oxygen reduction. ADVANTAGE - The method: provides catalysts which can be corrosion resistant, self-healing, more cost-effective, and can have higher catalytic activity; and improves synthesis of the catalyst and its properties compared to catalysts formed from a complex comprising a chelating.
