NOVELTY - A metal air battery (100) comprises a component (110) containing an electrolyte, a metal anode (120), an cathode (130) formed within a surface (s2) of the component opposite the surface (s1), and a barrier layer (160) configured to prevent the ambient air from entering the interior portions of the component through the several macroporous pathways (190) of the carbon-based textured scaffold when the barrier layer is arranged over an exterior surface of the cathode and seals the several macroporous pathways. The cathode comprises a carbon-based textured scaffold including several macroporous pathways configured to distribute oxygen and water vapor supplied by ambient air throughout the cathode and in interior portions of the component. The removal of the barrier layer from the exterior surface of the cathode is configured to activate the metal air battery by allowing the ambient air to enter the cathode and the interior portions of the component through macroporous pathways. USE - Metal air battery e.g. zinc-air battery used for electronic device. ADVANTAGE - The metal air battery can be selectively activated by a user, increased shelf-life, high capacity, and increased rate and/or amount of electrolyte produced during battery discharge cycle.
