NOVELTY - The system has a material having layers of graphene and graphene oxide and a light emitting source of near infrared (NIR) radiation. The light emitting source emits radiation in the range of 650 - 950 nm with an intensity of 1 - 330 mW/cm2. The light emitting source of near infrared (NIR) radiation is a LED. The light-activated sterilization is due to the presence of the layers of graphene and graphene oxide. The material having layers of graphene and graphene oxide has up to 800 layers of graphene and graphene oxide. A waveguide is coated with the material having layers of graphene and graphene oxide. The waveguide is connected to the light emitting source. The light emitting source emits radiation in the range of 750-850 nm. The light emitting source emits radiation with an intensity of 10-250 mW/cm2. The material having layers of graphene and graphene oxide is a few-layer graphene film and graphene oxide is a few-layer graphene oxide film. USE - Reusable light-activated sterilization system for medical device (claimed) such as catheter cap, haemodialysis catheter or chemotherapy catheter. ADVANTAGE - The sterilization system delivers an antibacterial effect on both planktonic bacteria and on adherent bacteria due to the combination of the NIR light source with the layers of graphene and/or graphene oxide.
