NOVELTY - Arylazo-heteroaryl compounds (I) are new. USE - (I) are useful as a thermal-storage material for a thermal-storage device, which is useful for storing energy (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - (I) provide the device, which is long-term thermal energy storage. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Arylazo-heteroaryl compounds of formula (I) are new. Dotted line = single or a double bond; ring A1 = aryl or heteroaryl; ring B1 = heteroaryl comprising pyrazolyl, oxazolyl, isoxazolyl, thiazolyl, isothiazolyl or imidazolyl; Q1 = C(R3) or N; X1 = N, C or C(R'); Y1 = N, C or C(R'); Z1 = N, N(R), O, S or C(R'); R1 = H, halo, optionally saturated 1-6C hydrocarbon, -CN, -NO2, -OR4, -OC(O)R4, -C(O)OR4, -C(O)R4, -NR4R5 or -C(O)NR4R5, where the 1-6C hydrocarbon can be optionally substituted 1-3 times by halo; R2 = H or optionally saturated 1-6C hydrocarbon; R3 = H or optionally saturated 1-6C hydrocarbyl; R4 = H or optionally saturated 1-50C hydrocarbyl; R5 = H or optionally saturated 1-6C hydrocarbyl; W1 = -CH2-, -O-, -C(O)O-, -C(O)S- or -C(O)NH-; R = H or 1-6C alkyl; R' = H or 1-6C alkyl; m = greater than or equal to 1, preferably 1-20; n = greater than or equal to 2, preferably 2-20; and p = 0-5, preferably 0-2. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) a composition comprising (I); (2) a composite structure comprising a porous structural component and the composition or (I) dispersed in a medium; (3) preparing (M1) (I); (4) a thermal-storage device comprising (I) or the composition, where (I) or the composition is retained on a substrate; and (5) storing energy comprising providing the energy storage device comprising (I), or the composition, where (I) is present as an E-isomer, activating (I) to produce a Z-isomer of the (I) and storing the Z-isomer of the (I) for a period of time.
