NOVELTY - A solid nanocomposite particle composition (C1) comprises: (wt.%) electrode active material (M1) (1-90) in a form of fine particles, rods, wires, fibers, or tubes with dimension smaller than 1 mu m; nano graphene platelets (1-90); and protective matrix material ( greater than or equal to 2) reinforced by the platelets which are not formed in situ from the matrix material. USE - Composition (C1) is used for lithium metal or lithium ion battery electrode applications (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The composition (C1) provides high anode capacity and good cycling stability. The lithium metal or lithium ion battery exhibits exceptionally high cycle life. The lithium secondary battery provides specific capacity of no less than 500, preferably 2000 mAh/g; and reversible specific capacity of no less than 1500 mAh/g after 100 cycles, preferably no less than 1000 mAh/g after 500 cycles. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) a lithium metal battery which comprises lithium metal anode, cathode comprising the nanocomposite solid particle, separator disposed between anode and cathode, and electrolyte in ionic contact with anode and cathode; and (2) a lithium secondary battery which comprises anode comprising the solid nanocomposite particle, separator disposed between anode and cathode.
