NOVELTY - Preparing silver bromide/bismuth bromide oxide/graphene photocatalyst comprises: e.g. treating graphite powder with mixture of concentrated nitric acid and sulfuric acid (1:2, volume/volume) in an ice bath; adding 3 g potassium permanganate slowly to a reaction mixture in ice bath, heating the reaction mixture up to 700C for 3 hours in a water bath, washing obtained graphene oxide (GO) using deionized water until pH 7 is reached; suspending the separated GO in a mixture of ethanol/water (70%:30%), further exfoliated through ultrasonication for 2 hours; adding 20 ml hydrazine hydrate (1 mM) to exfoliate GO to obtain graphene at pH 10, solution is further kept under ultrasonic radiations for 2 hours to obtain few layered graphene; centrifuging final product, washed and dried at 50 degrees C to obtain graphene; dissolving 3g bismuth(III) nitrate pentahydrate in 50 ml aqueous solution containing 5 ml acetic acid; and adding 0.15 g silver nitrate to this solution. USE - The method is useful for preparing silver bromide/bismuth bromide oxide/graphene photocatalyst, which is effectively used for photo degradation of phenol from simulated water (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The method provides: improved photocatalytic activity of bismuth bromide oxide for phenol degradation; photocatalyst that is less than 8 nm in thickness conformed from atomic force microscopy analysis; and photocatalyst displayed significant stability and recyclability for ten catalytic cycles. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Preparing silver bromide/bismuth bromide oxide/graphene photocatalyst comprises: treating graphite powder with mixture of concentrated nitric acid and sulfuric acid (1:2, volume/volume) in an ice bath; adding 3 g potassium permanganate slowly to a reaction mixture in ice bath, heating the reaction mixture up to 700C for 3 hours in a water bath, washing obtained graphene oxide (GO) using deionized water until pH 7 is reached; suspending the separated GO in a mixture of ethanol/water (70%:30%), further exfoliated through ultrasonication for 2 hours; adding 20 ml hydrazine hydrate (1 mM) to exfoliate GO to obtain graphene at pH 10, solution is further kept under ultrasonic radiations for 2 hours to obtain few layered graphene; centrifuging final product, washed and dried at 50 degrees C to obtain graphene; dissolving 3g bismuth(III) nitrate pentahydrate in 50 ml aqueous solution containing 5 ml acetic acid; adding 0.15 g silver nitrate to this solution; stirring magnetically the solution containing bismuth(III) nitrate and silver nitrate for 40 minutes in the dark, 1 g potassium bromide was added to the obtained solution, to get light yellow precipitates; sonicating after for 20 minutes, the suspension is kept for 3 hours; and filtering precipitates, washed thoroughly with distilled water and dried at 70 degrees C to obtain silver bromide/bismuth bromide oxide/graphene photocatalyst.
