NOVELTY - Bipolar battery (10) comprises first bipolar electrode (26), second bipolar electrode (28), and third bipolar electrode (30) positioned adjacent one another and being physically and electrically isolated from one another by intervening non-liquid electrolyte layers. The each of the bipolar electrodes comprising a bipolar current collector including a first electroactive material layer (54) connected to a first side and a second electroactive material layer connected to a second side. The each electroactive material layer comprises at least one of a lithium ion battery positive electrode material, a lithium ion battery negative electrode material, or a capacitor electrode material, and where at least one of the electroactive material layers comprises a capacitor electrode material. USE - Bipolar battery. ADVANTAGE - The bipolar battery exhibits a bipolar architecture provides certain advantages over monopolar battery architectures, includes increased electrical potential, energy density, and power density, more uniform current density, increases active material utilization and reduces electrical resistance.
