NOVELTY - Reducing environmental contaminants in feedstock heavy marine fuel oil involves pre-treating feedstock heavy marine fuel oil, where the feedstock heavy marine fuel oil is compliant with ISO8217: 2017 Table 2 as a residual marine fuel, except for the concentration of the environmental contaminants, in a pre-treatment unit to give a pre-treated feedstock heavy marine fuel oil, the pre-treatment reaction unit including sulfur absorption process unit containing a sulfur sorbent under sorbent desulfurization conditions, an oxidative desulfurizing process unit containing an oxidizing agent under oxidative desulfurization conditions. USE - Method for reducing environmental contaminants in feedstock heavy marine fuel oil. ADVANTAGE - The method enables to minimize the changes in the desirable properties of the heavy marine fuel oil (HMFO) and minimize the unnecessary production of by-product hydrocarbons (i.e. light hydrocarbons such as 1-4C hydrocarbons and wild naphtha, having a boiling point less than 150 F such as). DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Reducing environmental contaminants in feedstock heavy marine fuel oil involves pre-treating feedstock heavy marine fuel oil, where the feedstock heavy marine fuel oil is compliant with ISO8217: 2017 Table 2 as a residual marine fuel, except for the concentration of the environmental contaminants, in a pre-treatment unit to give a pre-treated feedstock heavy marine fuel oil, the pre-treatment reaction unit including sulfur absorption process unit containing a sulfur sorbent under sorbent desulfurization conditions, an oxidative desulfurizing process unit containing an oxidizing agent under oxidative desulfurization conditions, and microwave treatment process unit under reactive conditions of microwave energy having a frequency selected from the group consisting of 915-2450 megahertz, in the presence of microwave absorbent material, mixing a quantity of the pre-treated feedstock heavy marine fuel oil with a quantity of activating gas to give a feedstock mixture, contacting the feedstock mixture with one or more hydroprocessing catalysts under reactive conditions for desulfurization and demetallization to form a process mixture from feedstock mixture, where process mixture contains a majority of a product heavy marine fuel oil, receiving process mixture, separating product heavy marine fuel oil from the process mixture and, and discharging the product heavy marine fuel oil, where the discharged product heavy marine fuel oil is complies with ISO8217: 2017 Table 2 as a residual marine fuel and has an environmental contaminant concentration less than 0.5 wt %.
