NOVELTY - Sulfur-carbon composite comprises porous carbon materials, and sulfur on at least a part of the interior and surface of the porous carbon material. The porous carbon material has an average pore size of ≥ 30 nm. USE - The sulfur-carbon composite is useful as cathode for a lithium-sulfur battery (all claimed) for portable electronic devices, communication devices, and electric vehicles. ADVANTAGE - The sulfur-carbon composite: is economical, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly; and improves the capacity, output, and durability characteristics of battery. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: producing a sulfur-carbon composite comprising (a) preparing secondary structured porous carbon material by spray-drying the dispersion containing the porous carbon material and then heat-treating, and (b) mixing the secondary structured porous carbon material with sulfur to form a composite; cathode for a lithium-sulfur battery comprising sulfur-carbon composite; and lithium-sulfur battery comprising cathode, anode including anode active material, and electrolyte.
