NOVELTY - Preparing hydrogen terminated silicon involves reacting a silicon containing zintl compound with an aluminum compound optionally in the presence of a support material, optionally isolating the resulting product, adding a hydroxyl containing compound to produce the hydrogen terminated silicon, and optionally isolating the hydrogen terminated silicon, where the reacting step is carried out by mechanical milling in a solvent or in a molten salt comprising the aluminum compound in combination with alkali metal halides and/or alkali earth metal halides. USE - Method for preparing hydrogen terminated silicon that is utilized as an explosive, as an ion storage material for an electrode in secondary ion battery (all claimed), and as optoelectronic materials, photocatalysts, chemical and biochemical sensors. ADVANTAGE - The method provides environmentally friendlier hydrogen terminated silicon with high-yield in a cost-effective, rapid and readily scalable manner at low temperature, and provides ion storage material with high stability over multiple charge or discharge cycles, and high capacity for electrochemical energy storage.
