NOVELTY - A bipolar lithium ion cathode (10) comprises two different cathode active materials (50a, 50b) located in two distinct cathode layers (30a, 30b) on a single current collector (40). USE - Cathode used for bipolar lithium ion cell for battery e.g. lithium ion secondary battery used in battery module or pack (all claimed). Uses include but are not limited to cellular phone, laptop computer, electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, power tool, and hybrid electric vehicle. ADVANTAGE - The cathode produces battery having high charging-discharging energy density and safety. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: bipolar lithium ion cell (10), which comprises the bipolar cathode (10), an anode (60) containing an anode active material (90) and an electrolyte (100); battery, which comprises the bipolar lithium ion cell and a casing; battery module or pack, which comprises the battery, a positive connector, a negative connector and a housing; and formation of bipolar cathode.
