NOVELTY - A platinum-based intermetallic compound electro-catalyst coated with ultra-thin carbon layer comprises a carbon carrier and platinum-based intermetallic compound nanoparticles supported on the carbon carrier and covered by ultra-thin carbon layer. The platinum-based intermetallic compound contains platinum and at least one transition metal (M). The average particle diameter of the platinum-based intermetallic compound nanoparticles is not greater than 5 nm. The thickness of the ultra-thin carbon layer is not greater than 0.4 nm. USE - Platinum-based intermetallic compound electro-catalyst coated with ultra-thin carbon layer used for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) for converting chemical energy into electric energy. ADVANTAGE - The preparation method is simple process, excellent universality, and small molecular carbon layer generated in situ can effectively inhibit the sintering and agglomeration of nanoparticles in high-temperature orderly process, and the existence of ultra-thin carbon layer on the surface, can enhance the interaction between active particles and carbon supports, and inhibit the surface structure oxidation of nanomaterials, loss of transition metals, and particle agglomeration during the catalytic reaction. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for preparation of platinum-based intermetallic compound electro-catalyst coated with ultra-thin carbon layer, which involves using platinum metal salt precursor, a transition metal (M) metal salt precursor, a reducing agent, ethanol/cyclohexane solution, solvent used for providing small organic molecules, and hydrogen/argon atmosphere.
