NOVELTY - Coating agent comprises coal asphalt, petroleum asphalt, and/or petroleum resin as a solute, a solvent and crosslinking agent as an auxiliary agent. USE - The agent is useful for preparing coated modified graphite cathode material for battery, preferably a lithium ion battery and/or a solid state battery (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The method: is simple, feasible, economical, environmental friendly, and convenient to use; and has large-scale production. The graphite cathode material: has excellent graphite aggregate structure, excellent lithium ion rapid insertion and extraction capabilities and excellent cycling capabilities. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) preparing coated modified graphite cathode material by mixing graphite aggregate with the coating agent, heating under oxygen-containing atmosphere as gas atmosphere, and carbonizing under inert atmosphere and/or reducing gas atmosphere; (2) a coated modified graphite cathode material; and (3) a lithium ion battery.
