NOVELTY - Making functional lithium-exchanged zeolite particles, comprises: (a) combining a solution containing ammonium phosphate with lithium ion exchanged zeolite particles to form a first mixture; and (b) adding a polymeric binder and a lithium salt to the first mixture to form a first slurry comprising the lithium phosphate-containing lithium ion-exchanged functional zeolite particles. USE - The functional lithium-exchanged zeolite particles are useful for electrochemical cell. ADVANTAGE - The method is useful for is simple and economical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: making functional electrode particles, comprising: (i) combining a solution containing ammonium phosphate with a polymeric binder to form a second mixture, (ii) adding electroactive particles to the second mixture, and (ii) adding a lithium salt to the second mixture to form a second electrode functional particle slurry, the electrode functional particles comprising the electroactive particles and lithium phosphate; and #electrochemical cell comprising: a cathode layer containing a first electroactive material, an anode layer arranged spaced from the cathode and comprising a second electroactive material, a porous separator interposed between facing surfaces of the anode layer and the cathode layer, a liquid electrolyte infiltrating the anode layer, the cathode layer and/or the porous separator layer; and functional lithium ion exchanged zeolite particles comprising lithium phosphate and/or functional electrode particles comprising lithium phosphate and the first electroactive material and/or lithium phosphate and the second electroactive material.
