NOVELTY - A binder formulation comprises at least one water-soluble binder and at least one organic phosphonic acid or at least one phosphonate salt of organic phosphonic acid or their mixture. The organic phosphonic acid has molecular weight of 100-1000 g/mol. USE - Binder formulation used in composition for forming electrode e.g. cathode for lithium-ion battery (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The lithium-ion battery cathode binder formulation has excellent flame retardance and thermal stability. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: composition, which comprises the binder formulation, at least one cathode active material, and at least one electrical conductivity enhancing additive; electrode, which comprises aluminum current collector and at least one active material layer formed from the above composition, and formed on at least one surface of the collector; manufacture of the composition for electrode; and manufacture of electrode using the composition.
