NOVELTY - Substituted heterocyclic compounds (I) are new. USE - (I) are useful as a thermal-storage material (claimed) for photo-induced molecular transformations e.g. photo-chemical reactions, and reversible photo-mechanical isomerizations. ADVANTAGE - (I) provides controlled heat storage and triggered release. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Substituted heterocyclic compounds of formula (I) are new. Ring A, ring B1=aryl or heteroaryl 5- or 6-membered rings; R1-R4=ortho position to the azo group, and comprises halo, 1-6C alkoxy, 1-6C alkylthio, halomethyl, dihalomethyl, trihalomethyl, or di(1-6C alkyl)amino; R5=H, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, halo, trihalomethyl, or cyano; Q=X; X=-OC(O)-, -OC(S)-, -NHC(O)-, -SC(O)-, -NHC(S)-, -NHC(O)NH-, -NHC(S)NH-, -C(O)NHC(O)-; and Z1=6-18C straight- or branched-chain hydrocarbon. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: composition comprising at least one (I); composite structure comprising a porous structural component and (I); composite structure comprising an enclosure that comprises an optically transparent wall and defines a compartment comprising (I); thermal storage system comprising a composite structure; preparing (M1) (I); and toring (M2) energy comprising providing an energy storage device comprising at least one (I), where (I) is present as an E-isomer, activating (I) to produce a Z-isomer, and storing the Z-isomer of (I) for a period of time.
