NOVELTY - Apparatus (100) comprises: at least two plasmonic resonators (102) having a space between them, where the plasmonic resonators are configured to undergo plasmonic resonance upon irradiation by electromagnetic radiation, to generate an electric field in the space; and graphene oxide (104) positioned within the space and in electrical contact with the plasmonic resonators. USE - The apparatus is useful; in computer readable medium (claimed); and for water splitting. ADVANTAGE - The apparatus: is able to work in a non-aqueous environment; and allows high level of water penetration for splitting within high-surface area structures, and larger aqueous areas coming into contact with plasmonic near-fields. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Apparatus (100) comprises: at least two plasmonic resonators (102) having a space between them, where the plasmonic resonators are configured to undergo plasmonic resonance upon irradiation by electromagnetic radiation, to generate an electric field in the space; and graphene oxide (104) positioned within the space and in electrical contact with the plasmonic resonators. The graphene oxide is configured to attract water (106) molecules into the space, protonate water molecules present in the vicinity of the space, and by using the generated electric field in the space, split water molecules in the vicinity of the space, to produce hydrogen and oxygen. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: many apparatuses are dispersed in water; #manufacturing apparatus, comprising depositing plasmonic material to form a first plasmonic resonator, depositing graphene oxide in electrical contact with the first plasmonic resonator, and depositing further plasmonic material to form a second plasmonic resonator in electrical contact with the graphene oxide so that the graphene oxide is positioned within a space between the first and second plasmonic resonators, where the first and second plasmonic resonators are configured to undergo plasmonic resonance upon irradiation by electromagnetic radiation, to generate an electric field in the space; and #a computer readable medium comprising computer program code stored on it, where the computer readable medium and computer program code are configured to, when run on at least one processor, perform the method.
