NOVELTY - A water permeable membrane (100) comprises porous support (120); and composite, which is in fluid communication with the support and contains crosslinked graphene oxide (GO) composite layer (113). The GO composite layer is crosslinked by a crosslinker. USE - A water permeable membrane. ADVANTAGE - The crosslinked graphene based composite membrane provides selective resistance to fluids solutes while providing water permeability and enhanced water separation. The membrane preparation process is more environment-friendly and more cost-effective because water can be used as a solvent in preparing the GO membrane compositions. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A water permeable membrane (100) comprises porous support (120); and composite, which is in fluid communication with the support and contains crosslinked graphene oxide (GO) composite layer (113). The GO composite layer is crosslinked by a crosslinker comprising compounds of formula (2), (3A), and (3B), or their salts, and optionally formula (5). dashed line=presence or absence of covalent bond; R1, R2=NH2 or OH; R5=H, Me, or Et; R6, R7=H, COOH, or SO3H; k=0 or 1; and m, n=0-10. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) manufacture of water permeable membrane which involves resting coating mixture of single mixed aqueous solution of an optionally substituted GO and a crosslinker for 30 minutes to 12 hours to create a coating mixture, applying coating mixture to a substrate, repeating application step as necessary to achieve the desired thickness or number of layers, and curing the resulting coated substrate at 50-150 degrees C for 1 minute to 5 hours; (2) dehydration of unprocessed fluid which involves exposing unprocessed fluid to water permeable membrane; and (3) removal of solute from unprocessed solution which involves exposing the unprocessed solution to the water permeable membrane.
