NOVELTY - A composite ion exchange membrane (200) comprises a porous layer (202) comprising a binder comprising a polymer, a layer (204) comprising nanosheets (s1), which is coupled to the layer (202), and a layer (206) comprising a polymeric ion exchange membrane, which is coupled to the layer (204). USE - Composite ion exchange membrane is used in electrochemical apparatus e.g. fuel cell and electrolyzer (all claimed). Can also be used in solar hydrogen generation device, redox flow battery, dialysis apparatus, reverse osmosis apparatus, forward osmosis apparatus, pervaporation apparatus, ion exchange apparatus and sensor apparatus. ADVANTAGE - The composite ion exchange membrane has improved oxidation resistance and durability, excellent adhesiveness and mechanical strength, high ionic conductivity, good chemical and thermal stability in alkaline environment, and low gas or fuel cross-over. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) an electrochemical apparatus, which comprises the composite ion exchange membrane. The nanosheets (s1) comprise a two-dimensional nanostructure having an aspect ratio of 5 or more, and/or a laminar structure; (2) a fuel cell, which comprises the composite ion exchange membrane; and (3) an electrolyzer, which comprises the composite ion exchange membrane.
