NOVELTY - The collector has a free-standing, non-supported thin metal foil comprising thickness from 1 micro-meter to 30 micro-meter and two opposed parallel primary surfaces. A thin film of each graphene oxide sheets is chemically bonded to one of the opposed primary surfaces of the metal foil without using a binder or adhesive, where one of the primary surface does not contain a layer of passivating metal oxide, and the thin film of the graphene oxide sheets comprises thickness from 10 nano-meter to 10 micro-meter, physical density from 1.3 to 2.2 g/cm3. USE - Graphene oxide-bonded metal foil current collector for a rechargeable lithium battery or lithium-ion battery and a capacitor (all claimed) for use in electric vehicle (EV), hybrid EV (HEV), and portable electronic devices, such as lap-top computers and mobile phones. Uses include but are not limited to a lithium-sulfur battery, a lithium-selenium battery, lithium sulfur/selenium battery, lithium-air battery, lithium-graphene battery, and a lithium-carbon battery, and a symmetric ultracapacitor, asymmetric ultracapacitor battery, hybrid supercapacitor-battery battery, and a lithium-ion capacitor battery. ADVANTAGE - The collector provides a graphene oxide-bonded thin metal foil that is electrolyte-compatible, non-reactive, corrosion-protective, of low contact resistance, thermally and electrically conductive, ultra-thin, and light-weight, thus enabling a lithium battery or supercapacitor to deliver higher output voltage, higher energy density, high rate-capability, and longer cycle life. The collector is mechanically compatible with a tab, being readily or easily fastened or bonded. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The thin film of the graphene oxide oxide sheets comprises 0.1 to 10 wt.% of oxygen content. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a capacitor.
