NOVELTY - A method of improving fire-retardant property of substrate, involves providing a composite comprising graphene-based material intercalated and an inorganic metal hydrate, to a substrate. USE - Method of improving fire-retardant property of substrate e.g. cellulosic material e.g. pinewood slat, sawdust pellet and base paper, and thermoset/thermoplastic polymeric material (all claimed) e.g. polyvinyl alcohol and polystyrene. Uses include but are not limited to polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, polyester, polyvinyl alcohol, and polystyrene, which are in the form of sheet, film, plank, fiber, powder and particles. ADVANTAGE - The method is environmentally-friendly, and efficiently improves flame retardant property of substrate. The use of graphene-based composite effectively inhibits release of toxic and flammable volatiles from substrate which is exposed to fire. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for the substrate, which has improved fire-retardant property, and comprises composite comprising graphene-based material intercalated with inorganic metal hydrate. DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING(S) - The drawing shows a schematic view explaining provision of the graphene-based composite to the substrate, and fire-retardant features of the graphene-based composite.
