NOVELTY - A nano graphene-enabled vanadium oxide composite composition (C1) is formed of at least one graphene, graphene fluoride, or graphene oxide sheets or platelets and several nano-particles, nano-rods, nano-wires, nano-tubes, nano-sheets, and/or nano-belts of vanadium oxide with size smaller than 100 nm, where the graphene, graphene fluoride, or graphene oxide sheets or platelets have thickness of 0.34-20 nm and are in amount of 0.01-50 wt.% based on total weight of graphene, graphene fluoride, or graphene oxide and the vanadium oxide combined. USE - As nano graphene-enabled vanadium oxide composite composition useful as a lithium battery cathode active material for lithium battery cathode used in lithium battery (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The composite composition (C1) is useful as a cathode active material, where the active material exhibits a specific capacity greater than 400 mAh/hour for more than 100 charge/discharge cycles; exhibits a specific capacity greater than 300 mAh/h for more than 200 charge/discharge cycles; and exhibits a specific capacity greater than 200 (preferably greater than 300) mAh/h when measured at a current density of not less than 10 A/g or a charge/discharge rate of not less than 10 C. The electrode material exhibits an unprecedented combination of outstanding specific capacity, capacity retention, and rate capability characteristics. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A nano graphene-enabled vanadium oxide composite composition (C1) useful as a lithium battery cathode active material, is formed of at least one graphene, graphene fluoride, or graphene oxide sheets or platelets and several nano-particles, nano-rods, nano-wires, nano-tubes, nano-sheets, and/or nano-belts of a vanadium oxide with a size smaller than 100 nm, where the graphene, graphene fluoride, or graphene oxide sheets or platelets have a thickness of 0.34-20 nm and are in an amount of 0.01-50 wt.% based on the total weight of graphene, graphene fluoride, or graphene oxide and the vanadium oxide combined, and where the composite composition is prepared by precipitating vanadium oxide from a water or solvent solution containing a vanadium oxide or a vanadium oxide precursor and a graphene, graphene fluoride, or graphene oxide sheet dissolved or dispersed in it. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) lithium battery cathode (A1) comprising the composite composition (C1) as a cathode active material, where the active material exhibits a specific capacity greater than 400 mAh/hour for more than 100 charge/discharge cycles; (2) a lithium battery comprising anode, the cathode (A1), a separator disposed between the anode and the cathode, and electrolyte in physical contact with both the anode and the cathode.
