NOVELTY - Additive comprises 100 pts. wt. lithium cobalt oxide (I), and 0.1-20 pts. wt. carbon material adsorbed on the surface of the lithium cobalt oxide (I). The carbon material includes carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, graphite, graphene, carbon black, ketjen black, and/or acetylene black. The surface of the carbon material is modified with at least one functional group i.e. hydroxy group, carboxy group, amino group, amide group, sulfone group, and/or sulfide group. The carbon material is monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, trisamino-1-3C alkylamine, poly-1-3C alkyleneamine and poly-1-3C-alkylenimine on the surface. The average thickness of the adsorbed carbon material is 10-200 nm. The lithium cobalt oxide has average particle size of 0.1-10 μ m, and tetragonal structure with a space group of P42/nmc. USE - The additive is useful in positive electrode for lithium secondary battery (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The additive increases charge and discharge capacity, improves gas generation, and battery safety, reduces side reactions with the electrolyte due to generated gas, improves the electrical conductivity of the positive electrode, and provides lithium secondary battery having excellent electrical performance. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Additive comprises 100 pts. wt. lithium cobalt oxide of formula (LipCo(1-q)M1qO4) (I), and 0.1-20 pts. wt. carbon material adsorbed on the surface of the lithium cobalt oxide (I). The carbon material includes carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, graphite, graphene, carbon black, ketjen black, and/or acetylene black. The surface of the carbon material is modified with at least one functional group i.e. hydroxy group, carboxy group, amino group, amide group, sulfone group, and/or sulfide group. The carbon material is monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, trisamino-1-3C alkylamine, poly-1-3C alkyleneamine and poly-1-3C-alkylenimine on the surface. The average thickness of the adsorbed carbon material is 10-200 nm. The lithium cobalt oxide has average particle size of 0.1-10 μ m, and tetragonal structure with a space group of P42/nmc. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for positive electrode comprising positive current collector, and a cathode mixture layer disposed on the cathode mixture layer and containing a cathode active material, the cathode additive, and a binder, where the cathode active material is lithium metal composite oxide of formula (LixNiyCozMnwM2vOu) (II). M2=W, Cu, Fe, V, Cr, Ti, Zr, Zn, Al, In, Ta, Y, La, Sr, Ga, Sc, Gd, Sm, Ca, Ce, Nb, Mg, B, or Mo; x=1-1.3; y=0-0.95; z=0-0.5; w=0-0.5; v=0-0.2; and u=1.5-4.5.
